Your Next Volkswagen Might Feature ChatGPT

As CES 2024 kicks off in Las Vegas this week, Volkswagen will present the first vehicles in which the AI-based chatbot ChatGPT is integrated into its IDA voice assistant. The German automaker is set to become the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature.

Starting this spring in Europe, the new chatbot will be offered in conjunction with the latest generation of infotainment in the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7 electric vehicles, as well as the all-new Golf, Passat and Tiguan. Volkswagen says the feature is being considered for the U.S. (and possibly Canada, too), but don’t count on it just yet.

Enabled by Cerence Chat Pro from technology partner Cerence Inc., the integration of ChatGPT (a unique, automotive-grade version) into the backend of the Volkswagen voice assistant will offer “a multitude of new capabilities that go far beyond the previous voice control,” the company claims. For example, the IDA voice assistant can be used to control the infotainment, navigation and air conditioning or to answer general knowledge questions without the driver ever taking their hands off the steering wheel.

In the future, we’re told that AI will provide additional information in response to questions that go beyond this as part of its continuously expanding capabilities.

Crucially, ChatGPT will not gain any access to vehicle or user data. Furthermore, questions and answers will be deleted immediately to ensure the highest possible level of data protection, Volkswagen insists.

"We are now the first volume manufacturer to make this innovative technology a standard feature to vehicles from the compact segment upwards. Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT and strong collaboration with our partner, Cerence, we are offering our drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool," said Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at Volkswagen.

Updated 2025 Golf GTI, Golf R Coming Soon

As you can see here and in the photo gallery at the top of the page, a refreshed Volkswagen Golf GTI is on the way. Despite the fancy camouflage adorning the pre-production model shown at CES, we can spot changes to the headlights and wheels, as well as the rear spoiler, diffuser and taillights. Nothing major, mind you, but enough to give the exterior a racier look. Inside, physical buttons will return to the steering wheel, mercifully.

The high-performance Golf R will be updated at the same time. An official introduction is planned for later this month, and the company will simultaneously celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Golf. We’ll keep you posted.
