Refreshed Kia Sorento Adds Style, Tech and Rugged X-Pro Model

Kia chose the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show to host the North American debut of the refreshed and updated 2024 Sorento. Most of the changes also apply to the Sorento Hybrid and Sorento PHEV, but those are expected to hit dealerships later next year as 2025 models.

The exterior embodies Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy with the concept of “Bold for Nature.” The upright front hood and squared off edges are reminiscent of the Telluride, with its distinctive amber daytime running lights reimagined for a sleek aesthetic. Around back, the vertical taillights are unmistakably Telluride.

From the fully electric EV9’s playbook, the Sorento boasts a broad and rectangular front grille, complemented by vertically stacked LED projector headlights. The constellation-inspired Star Map lighting elements in the front and rear lend the vehicle a futuristic edge, while the front and lower bumpers incorporate a wider skid plate garnish for extra rugged appeal.

A Real Pro?

Incidentally, there’s a new X-Pro model joining the existing X-Line and taking adventure to another level. It features 17-inch wheels with a larger tire sidewall for standard BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, plus increased towing capacity up to 4,000 lbs. The X-Line and X-Pro each offer unique body colour options as well as rich interior combinations such as Olive Brown and Sage.

Speaking of the interior, the Sorento’s updated cockpit emphasizes horizontal features for a streamlined appearance and a sense of openness. Front and centre is an available new panoramic curved display that integrates dual 12.3-inch screens.

Following in the footsteps of the EV9, the Sorento is the second Kia to offer the brand’s next-generation operating system with faster processing and frequently used Quick Controls conveniently accessible with a swipe on the screen. It’s also equipped to receive over-the-air updates.  Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity is standard on all trims.

Additional tech features include an available digital key allowing drivers to unlock the doors and drive using a compatible Apple or Samsung device (and even share the key with another person). Smart cruise control with machine learning is designed to adapt to and match the driver’s driving style with certain inputs like accelerating and braking patterns. Elsewhere, an available digital rear-view mirror improves visibility.

Same Powertrains

Unlike the brand new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe, the Kia Sorento retains the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine (191 horsepower, 181 lb-ft. of torque) as standard equipment. Other gas-powered Sorentos use a turbocharged 2.5-litre mill (281 horsepower, 311 lb-ft.). In Canada, all of them get standard all-wheel drive.

As mentioned up top, the Sorento Hybrid (227 horsepower, 258 lb-ft.) and Sorento PHEV (261 horsepower, 258 lb-ft., 51 km of EV range) receive pretty much the same design and tech upgrades as their ICE-only counterparts, but they will arrive as 2025 models instead.

Further details specific to the Canadian market, including pricing, will be announced closer to launch in 2024.
