Upcoming Fisker PEAR is an Intriguing Little EV With a Cheap Price

Briefly showcased on August 3 at the company’s first-ever Product Vision Day, the all-new Fisker PEAR is a small and innovative electric crossover that will become the brand’s future entry-level model. An SUV? More like a big hatchback.

With pricing set to start at $29,900 USD (no word yet about Canada), it will be even more affordable than the Ocean, which retails from $37,500 south of the border and from $43,999 up here. That’s not counting applicable EV incentives, of course.

Forget the Fruit

“With PEAR, we threw convention out the window,” Fisker chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker said. “We created this vehicle with the idea that young people living in the world’s big cities need innovative, versatile, and affordable mobility.”

The name, by the way, stands for “Personnal Electric Automotive Revolution.” The Fisker PEAR uses a new light steel body structure, with the engineering and design teams having reduced the parts count by 35 percent. It stands 4.55 metres long, making it shorter than the Ocean (and roughly the same length as the Volkswagen ID.4).

One of the PEAR’s most unique and fascinating features is the so-called Houdini trunk that enables owners to load and unload in tight street parking situations and to avoid damage in parking structures with low ceilings. Instead of going up, the rear hatch and glass move down and disappear behind the rear bumper beam.

Up front, a drawer-like compartment could be used to store anything from delivery pizza to sweaty workout gear, thereby keeping odors out of the cabin. It will be offered with an insulated option to keep food hot or cold.

The cabin is designed to be extremely durable (with recycled and bio-based materials) and also has a Lounge Mode, with all seats folding flat including the rear seat folding backwards into the trunk area, to create a large lounge space for watching a movie or taking a rest. Incidentally, the PEAR will come with an optional 17.1-inch rotating screen for entertainment in Lounge Mode.

As you can see in the picture below, the versatile five-seat crossover will have an option to seat six people thanks to a large two-seat bench replacing the single front passenger seat and centre console.

Pretty Decent Speed and Range

Two battery options will provide an estimated range of either 290 km or 515 km, Fisker says. When it comes to acceleration, 0-100 km/h sprints are achieved in 6.8 seconds, which is quick enough. The PEAR will be offered in both RWD and AWD configurations, with standard 20-inch wheels mounted on low-rolling resistance tires (optionally 22-inch wheels on high-performance tires).

Fisker has already planned a high-performance variant, the PEAR Extreme. It will be the first Fisker vehicle to implement the company’s in-house-designed High-Performance Computer, called Fisker Blade, that will offer a completely new connected and digital customer experience. The vehicle also features a multi-gigabit internal Ethernet network that connects the rest of the vehicle systems to Fisker Blade for high-speed networking and diagnostics.

A production-intent PEAR will be exhibited publicly at the Fisker Lounge Munich on September 4-10, concurrent with the IAA Mobility 2023 event (which The Car Guide will attend). It is planned to be built in the U.S. in collaboration with Foxconn at a factory in Ohio.

Don’t hold your breath, though: manufacturing and deliveries are expected to begin in July… of 2025.
