2023 Challenger Black Ghost is Yet Another Nod to a Famous Dodge

Dodge today unveiled the sixth of seven special-edition models marking the end of the Charger and Challenger in their current form.

Following the Challenger Shakedown, Charger Super Bee, Challenger Scat Pack Swinger, Charger Scat Pack Swinger and Charger King Daytona, here we have the 2023 Challenger Black Ghost.

Just like the others, this new special edition pays tribute to the brand’s past and one famous Dodge in particular, namely the black 1970 Dodge Challenger RT SE owned by Godfrey Qualls. As the story goes, Qualls’ Challenger earned a legendary reputation for flexing its 426 HEMI-powered muscle on Woodward Avenue and then driving off mysteriously into the night, not to be seen again for months, leading to the “Black Ghost” nickname. It’s now a member of the National Historic Vehicle Register in the U.S.

The 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost, meanwhile, is based on the SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody and cranked up to 807 horsepower. The black-and-chrome appearance includes unique black “gator skin” roof vinyl graphics similar to the original.

There are a few more exterior highlights to point out, such as the “Challenger” script badges on the grille, front fenders and rear spoiler, the white stripe on the rear fenders and the bright fuel filler door. Lurking behind the 20x11-inch Warp Speed alloy wheels in Satin Carbon finish are black six-piston Brembo brake callipers.

Inside the car, a “Black Ghost” badge adorns the dashboard, the seats and door panels are wrapped in Laguna leather and Alcantara, the Alcantara-clad steering wheel sports a red “SRT” logo, and Dinamica suede is used for the headliner.

Only 300 units of the 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost will be built for North America, but the company won’t say how many are planned for Canada.

The seventh and final special edition of either the Charger or the Challenger—the very last of its kind—will be revealed at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, scheduled for November 1-4, 2022. Don’t miss it.
