Nissan Scratch-Healing Paint Now Available On... Cell Phones!
When the Infiniti EX35 debuted a few years ago, it boasted a pair of technologies that had geekdom alight with excitement. The first, a 360-degree camera system, is now available on a few other vehicles as well, while the second, self-healing paint, has received little attention since the car’s debut.
Using an elastic resin top coat, the paint prevents scratches from touching the inner colour coat, and is more scratch resistant than standard paint and can also heal over light scratches over night while needing multiple days for deeper scratches.
Of course, this makes sense on a car that’s subjected to the rigours of daily life, but it makes even more sense on things we use even more frequently; like cell phones. Not surprisingly, Nissan is selling the technology to NTT DoMoCo for use on the company’s Japanese-market cell phones. The paint is expected to be a value-added feature in Japan. Depending on the success of the paint in Japan, one should expect to see such a coating become available here in North America.
