Car Seats Have Become Works of Art

When we visit a dealership to shop for a new vehicle, the exterior design plays an important role. However, the interior presentation of a vehicle cannot be overlooked, as many automotive manufacturers rely on the professional work of interior decorators for their seat designs.

Without neglecting their comfort, obviously, even mainstream automakers seek to stand out from the competition with an appearance and a finish that would look right at home in luxury-branded vehicles. The quality and the texture of simulated leather, or genuine leather must feel rich, and since seat ventilation is a feature that’s being spread across the industry, the seat upholstery must then be perforated. Some manufacturers choose to offer various perforation patterns, while others add a little colour inside the holes for a nice contrast.

Seats covered in two-tone fabric or leather bring a splash of elegance or sportiness to a vehicle’s cabin, while some automakers play with shades of red, cream and brown to break the monotony of black. In sports cars, they can even mix leather with patches of suede or Alcantara. These grippy materials notably allow us to stay glued to the seat during spirited driving.

Contrast stitching is always a popular choice for creating a more luxurious seat finish, but some manufacturers offer diamond-shaped stitching patterns for a quilted design, which is very elegant. Last but not least, the use of seat piping is on the rise, especially if its colour contrasts with the seat upholstery.

Obviously, premium brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Cadillac are masters of seat design and its trimmings, but manufacturers of more-affordable vehicles are spending more time and effort in the appearance of their cockpits, such as Mazda, MINI and Ford. Simply put, when it comes to car seats, form has become just as important as comfort.
