When the Inside Trumps the Outside
As a society, are we too focussed on looks? Maybe. All too often we judge people by their appearance, before we even hear what they have to say. The same goes for books, which are literally judged by their covers. And at restaurants, we tend to choose dishes that we’ve seen pictures of.
But as the saying goes, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts.
What about with cars? Is the appearance—in this case, the vehicle body—overly important? Automakers invest a lot into their vehicle’s style. What’s the first thing we see when a new model is introduced? A picture of the exterior. And we only catch a glimpse of the cabin if we’re lucky.
But isn’t the passenger compartment more important? As a car owner, how much time do you spend looking at your parked car, compared to the time you spend driving it? Unless you’re a collector, you’ll spend more time sitting inside your ride than gazing at its body. In other words, if you choose a car for its looks, it’s to impress passersby!
Why not treat yourself instead with a nicely designed vehicle interior. You can’t see your car’s body from behind the wheel, so what’s the point of owning a pretty ride if it’s no fun to drive? If you see a Lamborghini, the outside is just as appealing as the inside. The same goes for a Bentley!
Luxury vehicle manufacturers have understood the issue, so what are the mainstream automakers waiting for? While some do a remarkable job on the interior design, others pay far too much attention to the vehicle body and forget that outward appearances aren’t what matters most, at the end of the day.
