Reworked EcoBoost, 10-speed transmission coming to F-150

Ford says a reworked version of its 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 will make more torque and come mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission in the 2017 F-150.

Torque numbers jump to 450 lb.-ft. in the second-generation of the twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre, from 420 lb.-ft., thanks to a bevy of new features and components.

According to Ford, the engine runs an all-new dual-direct port injection fuel system that boasts two injectors per cylinder—one mounted in the intake port and one inside the cylinder—in a first for the automaker.

The turbochargers are also new for the second-gen engine, with a lighter turbine wheel and electrically-activated wastegates, while hollow camshafts, more durable valves and hydraulic valve-lash adjusters fill out the heads.

The engine, along with its sister 2.7-litre EcoBoost powerplant, also features idle-stop technology.

F-150s equipped with the new engine will put power down through an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, which Ford claims delivers "improved acceleration and performance" compared with six-speed automatic transmissions.

It does so through a trio of overdrive gears and a wider gear ratio span, allowing lower rear axle ratios for improved fuel efficiency at highway speeds, according to the automaker.

The new transmission was built alongside General Motors, and will also be available in the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Expect 2017 F-150s to go on sale later this year.
