Ford announces Apollo Edition Mustang

"Ground control to Major Tom, commencing countdown, engines on."

So go the lyrics to 'Space Oddity' by David Bowie, a song released before Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969.

Though they're more relevant than ever today, with Ford announcing the space-themed Apollo Edition Mustang.

Decked out in a NASA-inspired livery, the Apollo Edition 'Stang is based on the 5.0-litre V8-equipped GT trim of the 2015 Mustang, and adds a carbon fibre front splitter, rear diffuser, rocker moldings and accent pieces, along with unique LED underbody lighting.

The NASA-inspired theme continues inside, with the Apollo Edition Mustang features tons of interior treatments to match the car's outward appearance.

It also features a performance package, Ford Performance supercharger and shifter, X-pipe with side and rear exhaust, sport-tuned suspension, six-piston Brembo brakes and custom Forgiato 21-inch wheels.

All told, the Apollo Edition Mustang makes 627 horsepower and 540 lb.-ft. of torque, according to Ford.

Engines on, indeed.

The Apollo Edition Mustang will be sold at auction July 23 at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2015 in Oshkosh, Wis., with proceeds benefiting Experimental Aircraft Association youth education programs.
