Bonneville Speed Week is Back for 2016

During the last two years, one of the automotive world's biggest events, the Bonneville Speed Week, couldn't be held. The surface condition has to be just right: since Speed Week happens on the Bonneville Salt Flats, the organizers have to find a long enough stretch of usable ground for high-speed passes. They need at least 12.9 km (8 miles) for the longest track; last year, the longest they found was 3.6 km long...

There are various reasons for this lack of usable surface, but the biggest is a nearby mine: they exploit potash, which makes the salt flats absorb more water and behave like mud.

This year, speed enthusiasts will be happy to know that the Bonneville Speed Week will be held. No less than three tracks were groomed by the volunteers.

According to the organizers, we can thank Save The Flats, a partnership funded in part by the mine. They injected funds and made efforts to minimize their damages to the salt flats, and it seems like it paid off.
