Here is the Blackbird, the Advertising's Industry's New Star

Car ads are often the first contact between the average buyer and a new model. They will see the car on TV, and this may start a thought process that will lead them into the dealership.

This is why the manufacturers spend fortunes to film these short videos. Obviously, costs are astronomic, as they need to find the vehicles—which, more often than not, are not even built in a factory yet—in addition to making sure they are always clean and perfect… Furthermore, the ads have to be re-shot every time the vehicle is updated or a new version is announced.

The Mill just rolled out a splendid alternative: here is the Blackbird, a neat little vehicle that will soon simplify those shootings.

The idea is pretty brilliant: the wheelbase can stretch by up to 120 cm and the width by 25 cm. The hubs are modular and can accommodate pretty much every type of wheel (in postproduction, it’s pretty hard to insert wheels!). Finally, the Blackbird has an electric drivetrain, and can emulate a FWD, RWD or AWD layout and simulate having more or less power. A set of cameras sees what goes on around the Blackbird and can render an image of the wanted model in real time.

Oh, and its name comes from an interesting fact: the vehicle is assembled in the factory where the SR-71 spy plane used to be built.
