New Names For The 2017 Porsche Cayman And Boxster

For now, Porsche’s nomenclature is simple enough: the iconic 911 (and the 918 Spyder) have a numeric name, while the rest of their lineup – Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, Macan – have more conventional names.

This is about to change: for the 2017 model year, the Boxster and Cayman will be united under the 718 banner.

Despite this new name, both cars will keep their identity: the convertible will be the 718 Boxster, while the coupe will be known as the 718 Cayman.

The brand’s aficionados will remember this name: the very first Porsche 718 was born in the '50s. It was a small race car powered by a flat-four that had a lot of success, scoring a class win at the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as three victories in the demanding Targa Florio.

This name change also means that another, more significant upgrade is also on its way. Soon, both 718 models will be fitted with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. We should see these new engines sometime in 2016.

Finally, the 718 will adopt the Porsche 911’s pricing logic, as the convertible will be more expensive than the coupe. Right now, it’s the opposite; the Cayman is priced at $59,900, while the Boxster retails for $59,400.
