2014 Ford Fusion Will Debut 1.5-liter EcoBoost Motor
Ford will be downsizing the engine choices offered in the Ford Fusion sedan once again - although not as drastically as it did with the mid-size car's most recent redesign. Ford has announced that the 2014 Ford Fusion will be replacing its 1.6-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder motor with a 1.5-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder. This marks the first commercial application of the 1.5-litre design in any Ford product.
The 1.5-litre EcoBoost, like the 1.6-litre, makes use of a turbocharger in order to better balance fuel consumption with power output. The new unit also borrows extensively from the three-cylinder EcoBoost engine available in the 2014 Ford Fiesta, particularly with regards to packaging. Power output is expected to be in the same ballpark as the 1.6-liter mill, which would keep the new EcoBoost engine the middle child of the Fusion's drivetrain family.
If the 1.5-litre EcoBoost is going to come in at close to 178 horsepower, like its 1.6-litre predecessor, then why make the switch at all? Ford claims that the new engine will deliver improved efficiency when compared to the slightly larger unit, which has been criticized for being unable to match its listed fuel economy out on the road.
