Toyota, Subaru Finally Reveal Their Pair of Sport Coupes!
After literally years of anticipation, it would appear the Toyota and Subaru are finally prepared to show off the fruits of their combined labours. After toying with enthusiasts the world over, the Japanese dynamic duo have released their new (and terribly named) offerings which can now be formally introduced as the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT 86 (or simply 86 in Japan).
Both cars look surprisingly similar, and will possess the same 2.0L horizontally opposed four cylinder, with Toyota claiming 197 horsepower from their version while Subaru managed to wring an additional three horsepower from theirs. Contrary to original thinking, the Subaru will not benefit from the use of the brand's famous symmetrical all wheel drive system, and both cars will feature the same transmissions and rear wheel drive architectures. However, that shouldn't ruffle too many feathers with the purist crowd, as Subaru has admitted their BRZ weighs just a scant 2,689 pounds, with the Toyota assuredly coming in thereabouts. Combined with their low center of gravities, their light weight, an available six speed manual gearbox, and their inherent sporting nature these might be just the ticket in terms of getting the car buying public jazzed up about Japanese cars again.
