North America's mass transit is the automobile

Jim Kenzie finds it a touch on the ironic side that Detroit's version of mass transit, the Detroit People Mover, runs right through the Cobo Center, home to the North American International Auto Show each year.

Why?

"The fact remains that for North America, the mass transit system is the automobile," he says.

With a population spread far and wide and, outside of certain American regions, a lack of adequate public transit, the automobile will remain the mode of transportation for at least the foreseeable future.
