Throwback Thursday: How turbocharging works

Turbocharging "was invented back in 1905," Bill Gardiner said, "but it's just coming to prominence today."

Ironically, that was in 1987, and it took another two decades or more before the use of turbocharging really took off in North America.

Regardless, the principal of the forced induction system is largely the same now as it was almost 30 years ago, and on this segment Bill breaks down exactly how it all works.

This segment originally appeared on Episode 8 of Motoring 1988.
