The catalytic converter, an emissions control device installed in modern internal combustion-powered automobiles to make them run cleaner, is nothing new.
In use in North America for about 40 years, the basic principle of the catalytic converter—reducing the toxicity of exhaust—hasn't changed, but a team of engineers from Waterloo, Ont., has been making some major headway.
Jim Kenzie was at the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre in Hamilton, Ont., to learn just what this team is up to, and how it could forever change automotive emissions.
