Tip of the Week: The evolution of fuel pumps
It wasn't that long ago that cars ran mechanical fuel pumps that delivered fuel to the carburetor.
The transition to fuel injection meant fuel pumps that ran 35 to 40 psi were mounted in the fuel tank to deliver fuel to the injectors.
The move to direct injection has meant improved power and fuel efficiency, but also new fuel pumps that run in excess of 2,000 psi of fuel pressure forcing fuel directly into the combustion chamber.
Motoring TV resident mechanic Bill Gardiner discusses the evolution of the fuel pump in this Tip of the Week.
