2026 Tokyo Auto Salon: 10 Cars, and a Truck, That Stole the Show
Result Japan NEO86
A tuning company went to work on the Toyota GR86 to give it some 1980s vibes and a front fascia that honours the Corolla AE86, including pop-up headlights. The result is pretty cool, isn't it? Orders for this conversion kit have already started in Japan.

Nissan Aura NISMO RC
This concept takes the Aura subcompact car (closely related to the discontinued Versa Note) to another level of performance and visual aggression. The body is 145 mm wider, sports an exclusive matte grey finish and houses an e-Power hybrid system (two electric motors and a battery charged by a gasoline engine). Nissan is exploring the possibility of turning it into a production model for Japan.

Toyota GR Yaris Morizo RR
The GR Yaris, which we sadly don't have in Canada, becomes a track beast called Morizo RR. It was created with the expert advice of Toyota’s CEO, Akio Toyoda a.k.a. Morizo, and the know-how gained in endurance races like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Extra carbon fibre and a sharper suspension are part of the mix. Two hundred units will be sold, split equally between Japan and Europe.

Toyota GR Yaris RALLY1
Here’s a rally car based on the GR Yaris. This one sports an extensively modified body, custom suspension and tires, plus a massive rear wing.

Toyota GR Hijet Morizo K-Trail
A new mid-engine GR model had been promised by Toyoda for this event. Some believed we would see a GR MR2. As it turned out, Toyota instead unveiled a high-performance kei truck derived from the Daihatsu Hijet.

Subaru WRX STI Sport# Prototype
Those hoping for the return of the WRX STI were disappointed. Subaru merely unveiled a WRX prototype with a manual transmission, larger wheels and red accents along the lower body. The same 271-horsepower boxer engine remains under the hood.

HRC Prelude
Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) gave the new Prelude a racier treatment using various parts and accessories, most of them for show, in an effort to highlight the new hybrid coupe’s customization potential.

HRC HR-V TrailSport
HRC also displayed a range of TrailSport models including one based on the HR-V subcompact SUV. Honda should definitely consider selling it in Canada to add some excitement to the CR-V's smaller sibling.

Autobacs Seven Arta GT
Let's stay with Honda because Japanese parts supplier Autobacs Seven showcased the Arta GT kit that transforms the Civic Type R and is inspired by the Super GT 500 race car. Their plan is to build 20 units, each one with a price tag exceeding the equivalent of $150,000 CAD.

Italdesign NSX Tribute
The Acura NSX bowed out over three years ago, but Italdesign paid tribute to it in Tokyo. The rear wing is a nod to the past, while the roof-mounted air intake is reminiscent of the NSX-R GT homologation special.

Rocket Bunny Suzuki Twin
Here’s a final one from the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. The tuning experts at Rocket Bunny transformed a Japanese kei car, specifically a Suzuki Twin (2003-2005), into a miniature race car resembling a Nissan GT-R from the R32 generation. How adorable. Too bad the original 658cc engine producing 27 horsepower remains unchanged.
