Stellantis No Longer Has Stake in Ontario Battery Plant

Stellantis has just sold to LG Energy Solution the 49% stake it held in their joint venture NextStar Energy, which owns and operates a new battery plant in Windsor, Ontario.

NextStar Energy was created in 2022 to build the first large-scale battery production factory in Canada. It began manufacturing battery modules in October 2024, but due to waning EV demand in North America, it changed its focus in November 2025 to produce energy storage systems for other applications and sectors, including artificial intelligence data centres.

Stellantis will remain one of its customers and continue to source battery products from NextStar Energy, the automaker announced.

“By enabling LG Energy Solution to fully leverage the Windsor facility’s capacity, we are strengthening its long-term viability while securing the battery supply for our electric vehicles,” Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa said. “This is a smart, strategic step that supports our customers, our Canadian operations, and our global electrification roadmap.”

To date, more than $5 billion has been invested in the facility, which employs over 1,300 people, with a long-term target of 2,500 employees as it scales to full production.
