Volkswagen ID.4 to Reportedly Become ID. Tiguan as Part of Upcoming Refresh
The Volkswagen ID.4 originally launched as a 2021 model and received improvements for 2024. More changes are coming soon including, apparently, a new moniker.
In case you didn’t know, the German automaker wants to move away from alphanumeric combinations for its electric vehicles and focus on names that resonate more in the minds and hearts of consumers, as evidenced by the all-new ID. Polo (based on the ID. 2all concept) over in Europe.

Although Volkswagen has declined to comment so far, the IG Metall workers' union used a recent press conference at the Emden plant to break the news that the ID.4 crossover will become the ID. Tiguan, as Automotive News Europe reports.
At the same time, Volkswagen designers will make several exterior and interior changes, bringing the vehicle closer to the style of the gasoline-powered Tiguan (pictured below). The latter introduced its third generation as a 2025 model and has added a more powerful turbo engine for 2026.

The same media outlet also reports that production for the European market will end in Zwickau and switch exclusively to Emden until 2031.
The Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, which serves the North American market, cut ID.4 production last September to adjust to waning demand. Given the Canadian tariffs on vehicles assembled in the U.S., it remains to be seen whether Volkswagen Canada will turn to Germany to import the future ID. Tiguan.
In the meantime, the list of recalls affecting the ID.4 continues to grow, and a class action lawsuit was filed in Quebec on July 28, 2025 regarding cracked windshields. Even though the ID.4 boasts attractive pricing, some dealers still have numerous units in stock, including a few 2024 models that have yet to be sold.
