It’s Official: Stellantis Axes Plug-in Hybrids in North America

Stellantis' electrification plans are experiencing yet another major twist. After cancelling the fully electric Ram pickup project in favour of a gasoline-burning, range-extending variant, the automaker is now eliminating all plug-in hybrid models in Canada and the U.S.

It all started last September when Jeep backtracked on its promise to launch a Gladiator 4xe. Then, later during the fall, more problems and recalls affected the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, leading to a stop-sale order in the absence of a fix.

Today, The Car Guide received confirmation that PHEV production has been terminated:

“Stellantis continually evaluates its product strategy to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory requirements,” a Canadian PR rep told us in an email. “With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs.”

The official statement from Stellantis continued as follows: “This approach reinforces the company’s commitment to offering advanced propulsion systems that maximize efficiency and provide options from internal combustion to hybrid, range‑extended, and fully electric solutions.”

So, just to be clear, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and Dodge Hornet PHEV will not return for 2026 or at any point beyond that. These vehicles will only offer gasoline engines from now on. In the case of the Hornet, imports from Italy are still suspended due to U.S. tariffs (which affect availability in Canada).

However, the all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee with a standard hybrid system remains, as do Stellantis' various all-electric models (Fiat 500e, Dodge Charger Daytona, Jeep Recon, etc.). The above announcement also confirms that upcoming range-extending electric vehicles are still a go, including the Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV and the Ram 1500 REV.

Existing owners of plug-in hybrid models will obviously continue to benefit from Stellantis support when it comes to warranties, service and parts.
