All-New 2026 Honda Prelude Debuts as Sporty Hybrid Coupe

The long-awaited return of the Honda Prelude is finally becoming real today with the official debut of the production model. Taking over from the discontinued Civic Coupe and borrowing key components from the high-performance Civic Type R, this new two-door coupe (with a rear hatch) shows Honda’s continued focus on sportiness and driving pleasure.

“Just mentioning the Prelude brings a rush of nostalgia and fond memories for generations of Canadians that grew up with one of Honda’s most storied nameplates,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President of Honda Canada.

The 2026 Prelude will arrive at Canadian dealerships in November of this year. Until then, here's what you need to know about it.

Exclusively Hybrid

As previously reported, the new Prelude uses the same powertrain as the Civic Hybrid, namely two electric motors paired with an Atkinson-cycle, 2.0-litre direct-injection gasoline engine. Output and torque amount to 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft, respectively, which matches the figures of its four- and five-door siblings. Expect 0-100 km/h acceleration in about 7 seconds and combined fuel consumption of around 5 L/100 km. Four drive modes are available including Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual.

A direct-drive gearbox, different from an electronic CVT, is also part of the mix, which will turn off some potential buyers. Honda is innovating with a so-called S+ Shift system that simulates gear changes, features virtual rev-matched downshifts and artificially amplifies the engine sounds through the speakers. However, it’s no substitute for a good old manual gearbox, especially one as slick as Honda’s six-speed unit, which is reserved for the Civic Si.

Solid Hardware

Elsewhere, the 2026 Honda Prelude (single trim level only) benefits from black 19-inch wheels and, just like the almighty Civic Type R, Brembo four-piston aluminum front calipers, a dual-axis strut front suspension and adaptive dampers, the latter specifically tuned for the Prelude.

Inside, look for leather-trimmed front sport seats with perforated houndstooth pattern, integrated headrests and three-way heating. Incidentally, the driver’s seat features more prominent side bolsters and firmer padding than the passenger’s seat for increased support. There’s also a leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel with alloy shift paddles, plus sport pedals.

Due to the 2+2 seating configuration, the rear seats are relatively tight and best used for hauling extra cargo.

Familiar Technologies

The driver’s cockpit has a familiar look and feel, combining a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster with a 9-inch touchscreen. The infotainment system comes with Google built-in and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. A WiFi hotspot, wireless phone charger and 8-speaker Bose Centerpoint premium sound system complete the tech package.

The full suite of Honda Sensing safety and driver assist technologies will ensure protection and peace of mind. This includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Adaptive Cruise Control and even a Post-Collision Braking system.
