Tesla Unveils Refreshed and Upgraded Model Y Performance
The Tesla Model Y Performance is finally back, at least in Europe (and a few other global markets) where it has just been unveiled with deliveries to begin sometime in September.
Nothing has been announced for North America yet, but sales here should begin at the same time or almost.

Saving 2 Tenths of a Second and 2 Percent Energy
According to the figures circulating across the Atlantic, the combined output of the dual motors would only increase from 456 to 460 horsepower. However, it is reasonable to expect the Canadian-bound Model Y Performance to match the 510 horsepower of the Model 3 Performance.
The company promises a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, which is two tenths of a second quicker than before—matching the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance but not quite the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (3.4 seconds).
Incidentally, the new 4DU drive system, also found on the Model 3 Performance, combines the electric motor, inverter and transmission into a single assembly that delivers a claimed 2-percent reduction in energy consumption.
Battery capacity isn't specified, although energy density is said to be increased, resulting in a range of 580 km according to the WLTP test cycle used in Europe. The figure in Canada will inevitably be lower, but expect it to easily beat the 459 km achieved by the old Model Y Performance. For the record, the current Model Y Long Range is rated at 526 km.
Improved Suspension and Cabin
Also noteworthy are the new electronically controlled, continuously variable dampers, which were adapted from the sedan to accommodate the SUV's larger size and weight. Tesla engineers also revised the suspension springs, anti-roll bars and bushings, in addition to increasing the body's torsional rigidity.
Exterior changes include redesigned bumpers, a carbon fibre rear spoiler extension and a more prominent rear diffuser, not to mention a unique badge on the liftgate. Red-painted brake calipers slow down 21-inch Arachnid 2.0 wheels.
What about the interior? There are new sports seats with integrated headrests, larger side bolsters and a ventilation function. Carbon fibre is more visible throughout and the centre touchscreen is enlarged to 16 inches (previously 15.4 inches), while a 15-speaker audio system is also part of the standard equipment.
How much will this new Model Y Performance cost in Canada? As you know, with Tesla, it's always difficult to say, especially since prices are constantly being adjusted throughout the year. The standard Model Y Long Range currently sells for $64,990 (MSRP), so expect to pay around $80,000.
