Audi Adding 8-Speed Gerbox To New Models

When Lexus first introduced their eight speed automatic, many considered it to be superfluous advancement with little practical application. However, while we may not have truly appreciated the application of two more gears, the advantages are obvious: better fuel economy and increased acceleration.

So, like so many other pieces of automotive technology, it comes as no surprise that other manufacturers want to get in on the action, and Audi seems to be leading the charge. Announcing the availability of an eight-speed transmission in the upcoming A8 and Q7 previously, they’ve just now announced that the A4, A5, and Q5 lines will also reap the rewards of eight forwards gears. With CAFE standard looming, this stands as yet another step towards leaner, greener cars that don’t have to sacrifice performance.
