The Montreal International Auto Show: 100 Years and Going Strong!

Motor shows may feature the latest in auto industry developments, but there’s nothing new about auto shows themselves, in the larger sense of the term. In fact, all of the world’s major capitals have been holding these types of events since the beginning of the 20th Century. The Montreal Automobile Traders Association (today known as the Montreal Automobile Dealers Corporation) was founded in 1913, and it immediately jumped into action and organized an auto show in the city. Held in a military exercise hall, the city’s first show was certainly not as big as the current-day event held at Montreal’s Palais de congrès. And yet, the public was as eager to attend it then as it is today!

Visiting an auto show – and especially the one in Montreal, which is among the biggest in Canada – gives you the chance to see what’s available on the market, compare products with ease as you go from booth to booth, and get information from the representatives on site.

The latest trends

One of the hottest trends right now is smaller engines that pack more punch – all while guzzling less gas. If V8s are still the best option in your mind, you might be very surprised by what you learn at the auto show!

Another trend to keep an eye out for is smaller cars that offer more luxury and better performance than ever before. Today, a number of sub-compacts feature the same equipment level as intermediates. Then there are the latest SUVs and crossovers, which can tackle poorly maintained roads while still providing the same level of comfort as a sedan – and sometimes even more! Electronically controlled all-wheel drive is another wonder that can do miracles.

The most up-to-date vehicles can be equipped with a navigation system, in-car telephony and, obviously, a sound system with sub-woofers. Some models have even done away with CD players, offering just a USB port that can connect to your smartphone, MP3 player or tablet device.
Even if you don’t intend to buy a new vehicle for another couple of years, visiting this year’s Montreal International Auto Show (MIAS) is an opportunity to see the latest developments in onboard technology and equipment. And it goes without saying that checking out the show is a must if you plan on buying a vehicle in the coming months. The different representatives working the show will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Little extras that make all the difference

Since the MIAS is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, history lovers and classic car buffs will be treated to a trip down memory lane at the Centennial Avenue exhibit. There will be 10 different vehicles on display, each representing a different decade.

The Montreal show is constantly evolving, and as proof, visitors will be given the chance to test drive hybrid and electric vehicles on site, including the Ford Focus EV, Fusion Energi, C-Max Energi, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf, smart eDrive and Toyota Prius Plug-In. The test circuit will cover the area immediately surrounding the Palais des congrès.
