1.4 million Ram Pickups Recalled Globally for Faulty Tailgate

Stellantis has announced a recall on approximately 1.4 million 2019-2022 Ram pickups covering the 1500, 2500 and 3500 model lines.

Most of these are in the U.S.—1.23 million units to be exact—but a significant number (around 120,000) are in Canada. The rest are split between Mexico and outside of North America.

The problem is a tailgate that might not latch properly and could open while driving. Obviously, unsecured cargo could fall off the bed as a result and create a road hazard increasing the risk of a crash.

No such incidents have been reported yet, which is good news. Stellantis opened an internal investigation back in July 2021 and has been continuously monitoring the situation ever since.

According to documents sent to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker has received more than 800 warranty claims and other reports potentially related to the issue.

Affected owners will be notified starting in late January. Ram dealers will inspect the tailgate striker alignment to the box latch and make the necessary adjustments.

This is the latest in about a dozen recalls that have been announced this year for current-generation Ram pickups. Issues with the rear-view camera, seat belts and windshield wipers are among the list. However, the most serious recalls involve the 3.0-litre and 6.7-litre diesel engines, more specifically the high-pressure fuel pump in the former and the transmission mated to the latter, causing rough engine operation and possible leaks.

You can check out the automaker’s recall database to see if your Ram vehicle is part of any of these recalls.
