2018 Mazda CX-5: More Efficient, Better Equipped

Mazda Canada has just announced the arrival of the 2018 Mazda CX-5, and after giving it a major overhaul in 2017, the Japanese manufacturer has already proceeded with some changes.

First, the 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre four-cylinder engines have been revised to provide greater low-rpm torque. The 2.0L mill’s output hasn’t been specified yet (it produced 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque in 2017), but the 2.5L engine will develop 187 hp and 186 lb.-ft.

However, the big news regarding the SUV’s mechanicals is that the 2.5-litre engine receives a cylinder deactivation system. At stable speeds, two of the four pistons shut off in order to reduce consumption—20% at 40 km/h and 5% at 80 km/h, according to the company.

Curiously, Mazda hasn’t provided any information as to the availability of the diesel engine that was announced when the 2017 CX-5 was unveiled. This powertrain was supposed to be offered before the end of the year.

Standard features on all versions of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 will now include automatic headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers as well as illuminated power window switches. In addition, Smart City Brake Support, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are now standard in every CX-5 as well.

An i-ACTIVESENSE package for the base GX trim is now offered, which adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, pedestrian detection, Distance Recognition Support System, Front Obstruction Warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high beams and Colour Multi-information Display. All this was previously available in the GS and GT.

Here is the price list for the 2018 Mazda CX-5, which will go on sale in December. Freight and delivery charges are extra.
