The Millionth Chevrolet Corvette Will Be Rebuilt

When the Bowling Green sinkhole ate eight ‘Vettes at the National Corvette Museum, a lot of vehicles with historical significance were damaged. Most of them were destroyed, but Chevrolet said that they would restore every car they could. The one that was in the best shape, the prototype for the ZR1 –nicknamed Blue Devil– was restored and showed at last year’s SEMA Show.

Now, it’s time for the second Corvette to get refurbished: the millionth example of Chevrolet’s iconic sports car, a 1992 white convertible with a red interior is being worked on by GM’s Design Centre, a department that usually builds prototypes.

While restoring a 1992 Corvette wouldn’t typically be a hard endeavour (and maybe not a worthy one), this particular car is different. The team wants to reuse as many of the original parts as they possibly can instead of just fitting new ones. For example, the stock doors were signed by the factory workers, so they have to be repaired and not replaced.

Another Corvette, a 1962, will be restored by the museum itself.
