We Might not get the Nissan IDx, After all...
A few months ago, Nissan was adamant that they would produce an affordable rear-wheel drive coupe based on one of their IDx concepts, the Freeflow or the NISMO. These cars were both inspired by an older model from the brand that had been extremely successful, the Datsun 510.
We were stocked by this news. Another affordable RWD sport coupe would have brought some serious competition to the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ duo, and would have generated interest for this segment.
However, during a recent interview, Pierre Loing, Vice President for Product Planning, said the production of the IDx was not exactly a done deal. According to him, developing a complete platform from scratch for a niche-market sub-$30K RWD sports car was not financially viable, and judging by the low sales number for the Toyota/Subaru twins, he may be right.
So unless Nissan finds a way to use this small RWD platform on other models, we might never see the quirky little IDx on our roads.
