Audi Might Produce the R8 e-tron

The fabulous electric-powered Audi R8 which was first presented in 2009 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, was originally scheduled to be produced starting in 2012. Unfortunately the plug was pulled on the project due to range issues.

Today, we’ve learn that Audi is again interested in producing its R8 e-tron albeit in very small quantities.

The turnaround was signed off on by Ulrich Hackenberg, the new exec responsible for technical development at Audi and who Volkswagen has to thank for its E- Up! and e-Golf electric models.

If Tesla can do it..

Obviously in the head of more and more manufacturers is the fact that if Tesla can build an electric sedan with a range of over 400 kilometers, it is clear that they should be able to do it too.

Audi hopes to offer an electric R8 with a range similar to that of Tesla with the help of a new set of more efficient lithium-ion batteries.

With two electric motors, the future Audi R8 e-tron would have a total of 381 and a massive 605 lb-ft of torque. As for performance, it would go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 200 km/h.
