Audi SQ5: It was not originally planned for North America

Following the presentation of the SQ5 TDI and SQ5 TDI Exclusive Concept, we learned neither of them was supposed to cross the Atlantic.

For the carbuilder from Ingolstadt, these represent the first SUVs sporting the S and TDI badges.

Today we learn the vehicle will be sold in North America after all.

It is distinguished by:

-    Aral Blue body color;
-    Xenon beams;
-    LED daytime lights;
-    An exclusive interior presentation.

The North American powertrain

For North American acceptance the Audi SQ5 trades the original TDI engine for a supercharged power plant dear to the German manufacturer.

We are talking about the excellent supercharged 3.0l TFSI V6, producing 354 horsepower and 346 lb-ft.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Performance-wise, the vehicle reaches 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/hr.

Of course, the Audi SQ5 receives the Audi exclusive Quattro all-wheel drive system and firmer suspension settings. Ground clearance is slightly less than a standard Q5.

Following the unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show watch for the Audi SQ5 TFSI to reach dealers in the spring of 2013.

Some countries are luckier than others
The Audi SQ5 TFSI is available exclusively in the following countries: South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chili, China, South Korea, United States, Mexico, Russia, Singapore and Ukraine.
