Mercedes-Benz CLA: A compact CLS for Detroit

Following a horde of rumours, Mercedes-Benz finally unveils the world premiere edition of the CLA series at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The elegant compact four-door follows in the style of the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The design evolved from the Style Concept Coupe concept vehicle revealed at the Beijing Auto show.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA is a derivative of the new A Class platform already sold in Europe.

The CLA also inherits the new Floating Dots front grille.

Not quite as long as the Class C sedan, it easily slots in between the B and C Class Mercedes-Benz models.

European Powertrain

Expect the Mercedes-Benz CLA to receive current Class A engines such as :

  • CLA 180 with 122 horsepower four-cylinder engine;
  • CLA 200 with 156 horsepower four-cylinder engine;
  • CLA 250 with 211 horsepower four-cylinder engine;
  • CLA 220 CDI with 170 horsepower four-cylinder engine.

A more sporting CLA 45 AMG should follow in the next model year with a potent 335 horsepower engine.

The elegant four-door coupe will be front-wheel drive with more luxurious models using the all-wheel drive 4MATIC specially designed for front-wheel drive applications.
