2011 World Car of the Year: The finalists

The “World Car of the Year” title – WCOTY to its closest friends – was first awarded in 2005. The event was set up by a completely independent body that assembled some 60 journalists from around the world, notably from Europe, Asia and the Americas. These writers were aided in their task by stylists and engineers who provided expertise and helped them make sound choices. And everything took place under the watchful eye of the firm KPMG, whose reputation is known the world over.

More than 60 cars were initially considered, some of which would go on to be nominated. And finally, at the Geneva International Auto Show, three finalists were named in each of the four categories.

More and more judicious choices

The first car to earn this highly sought-after title was the Audi A6 sedan. The next year, the BMW 3-Series was named “2006 World Car of the Year,” followed by the Lexus LS460, the Mazda2 (Demio) and the Volkswagen Polo in 2010.

Three finalists in each category:

2011 World Car of the Year:
Audi A8
BMW 5-Series
Nissan LEAF

2011 World Green Car of the Year:

BMW 320d EfficientDynamics
Chevrolet Volt
Nissan LEAF

2011 World Performance Car of the Year:

Ferrari 458 Italia
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Porsche 911 Turbo

2011 World Car Design of the Year:

Alfa Romeo Giulietta
Aston Martin Rapide
Ferrari 458 Italia

As you can see, “cars” and not “vehicles” are being chosen, which automatically excludes all other vehicle categories.

On the way to the New York Auto Show
The next phase will take place on April 21 at the New York Auto Show, where the names of the winners in each of the categories will be announced.

Winning this prestigious title creates a fantastic opportunity for manufacturers. They get global media coverage and the chance to shout from the rooftops that one of their models has just won one a major title. However, this doesn’t guarantee that the winners’ sales figures will soar to new heights...but it sure can’t hurt!
