Gas-powered 2016 Nissan Titan to make 390 horsepower

With the redesigned 2016 Nissan Titan hitting dealerships, a lot of talk has centred on the available 5.0-litre Cummins turbodiesel and its impressive 555 lb.-ft. of torque.

It won't be the sole engine choice, though, and Nissan has announced an all-new 5.6-litre gas-powered V8 will also be available in the redesigned fullsize pickup.

Built in Tennessee, the new Endurance V8 replaces the current 5.6-litre, and makes 390 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque.

That's up substantially over the current engine's 317 horsepower and 385 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Titan's new gas engine features direct injection and Variable Valve Event & Lift technology, which combines hydraulically-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response.

"Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake with a throttle valve, and valve timing and opening with non-variable camshafts," Nissan said in a statement.

Gas-powered Titan XD models, which, according to Nissan, stake "out a unique position in the segment between" light- and heavy-duty pickups, will come equipped with seven-speed automatic transmissions.

More information is set to be released closer to the gas-powered Titan's spring 2016 on-sale date.
