Hyundai Veloster Turbo Bowing in Detroit

For all its balls-out styling, scoops, and asymmetrical construction, Hyundai’s Veloster is a relatively sedate little coupe… sedan… hatchback… thing. With 138 horsepower coming from its 1.6 litre naturally aspirated four cylinder, it’s pretty sharp in the handling department, but could use a little bit more power under the hood in order to compete with the large array of moderately quick hot hatches Canadian buyers can choose from.

So, in what has become a quick tradition for Hyundai, they’ve decided to bolt a turbocharger onto the little four cylinder. Adding 63 horsepower and bringing the total output to 201 horsepower and 196 foot pounds of torque, the car tips the scales at an impressively light 2,800 pounds (just 216 pounds heavier than the standard Veloster) and should provide pretty convincing performance. Coupled with the, ahem, interesting styling, the Veloster Turbo should provide a compelling balance of power, performance and practicality.
