Throwback Thursday: The birth of four-wheel steering

It was the late 1980s, and Honda engineers were on the brink of something spectacular, or so they thought.

Whether it was the funky feeling or the cost of repair bills, four-wheel steering never really caught on.

General Motors tried to revive it in the early 2000s with its Quadrasteer system available on the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups, as well as the GMC Yukon XL and Chevrolet Suburban SUVs, but again, not many takers.

Fast forward to today, and four-wheel steering is back in business, employed my Porsche in select 911 models, and the 918 Spyder.

Acura has a similar system available in its RLX.

In honour of the technology's humble past, we look back at Motoring 88, when Graeme and Brad were feeling out four-wheel steering for the first time.
