Your Mustang Mach-E Could Lock You In or Out, Ford Warns
Ford has suspended deliveries of its Mustang Mach-E electric crossover in order to fix a problem with the door handles that could lock people in or out of the vehicle. Units covering the 2021-2025 model years will also be recalled.
A total of more than 300,000 Mustang Mach-Es are said to be affected worldwide, including nearly 197,000 in the U.S., according to The Detroit News. The number in Canada is 32,569.

Instead of physical door handles, the Mustang Mach-E uses an electronic latch system. Consequently, the door handles could stop working if the 12-volt battery that feeds the system suddenly runs empty. This could cause the doors to lock with no means to open them from the inside or outside.
It appears that jumping the battery or getting an unlocking specialist wouldn’t solve the problem, either.

Here’s the official explanation: “In the event of an unexpected 12-volt battery discharge, the front door electronic latches may retain their last lock/unlock status. If the driver or front passenger exits the front doors using the mechanical inside release handles, the doors may remain locked when they are closed. This may result in an unexpected lock-out condition for the driver and front passenger without the ability to immediately re-enter the vehicle.”
The Mustang Mach-E has a mechanical door opening for front-seat occupants only.

Ford claims it is unaware of any accidents or injuries so far. However, as InsideEVs found, several owners have reported such experiences on online forums such as Mach-E Forum.
Dealers will have to perform a software update on affected vehicles to remedy the situation. Said update is currently under development and not available yet.
