Nissan Reveals Key Specs for Upcoming, Third-Gen LEAF

The all-new, third-generation Nissan LEAF, designed as a small crossover slotting below the Ariya, will make its official debut later in June, but today the company provided more insights into the vehicle.

In addition to being the most aerodynamic Nissan ever with a drag coefficient of just 0.26, and offering a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic technology, this new LEAF will feature a 3-in-1 electric powertrain (motor, inverter, reducer) that is 10 percent smaller. It will generate up to 214 horsepower—same output as the outgoing generation—and up to 261 lb-ft of torque instead of 250.

Truth be told, we would have liked more than that, but let's wait and see the acceleration times before passing final judgment. By the way, Nissan is making no mention of all-wheel drive for the time being, which likely means that the new generation will remain front-wheel drive. Another disappointment.

On the other hand, according to chief engineer Hiroki Isobe, handling will be significantly improved thanks in part to a new independent multi-link rear suspension that replaces the torsion beam. At the same time, the CMF-EV platform (shared with the Ariya) and the more rigid body structure combine to increase lateral stiffness by 66 percent.

Despite the larger available 19-inch wheels, the turning radius is said to be 10 cm shorter at 5.3 metres overall, courtesy of an upgraded rack electronic power steering system. Look for greater maneuverability in urban environments.

Meanwhile, the cabin promises to be even quieter. For example, at speeds of 50 km/h, the noise level is reduced by up to 2 decibels. Just imagine what it’s like on the highway. Furthermore, by repositioning the HVAC unit under the hood, engineers have created more space inside for front-seat occupants.

Isobe, who says “the top priority for our engineering team was optimizing thermal management and never wasting energy,” explains how heat produced by the on-board charger is used to warm up the battery, which wasn’t the case now. This will maximize range, especially in cold weather.

Another short video will be posted on Nissan’s YouTube channel next week ahead of the official introduction later in June. Keep following The Car Guide to learn more.
