Apple CarPlay Ultra is Here, Debuts in Aston Martin Cars
Apple today announced the launch of CarPlay Ultra, the next generation of CarPlay designed to “deliver the best of iPhone and the best of the car” by deeply integrating with the vehicle.
Supporting iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later, the system provides information for all of the driver’s screens, including the instrument cluster, while reflecting the automaker’s look and feel and offering an even more customizable experience, Apple said.

Expanded Presence and Control
CarPlay Ultra provides personalized content for all the driver’s screens, such as dynamic options for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and more. Drivers can also choose to show information from their iPhone, like maps and media, along with information that comes from the car, such as advanced driver assistance systems and tire pressure, right in the instrument cluster.

Then there’s the ability to use on-screen controls, physical buttons or Siri to manage both standard vehicle functions like the car’s radio and climate, as well as advanced, vehicle-specific features and controls like audio system configurations or performance settings. Furthermore, CarPlay Ultra introduces widgets powered by iPhone that fit the car’s screen or gauge cluster to provide information at a glance.

To Each Company Its Own Design
CarPlay Ultra will have a different look and feel depending on the vehicle brand. Custom themes are developed in close collaboration between Apple and each automaker’s design team for a tailor-made experience. Drivers can also personalize the colours and wallpapers of themes to match their individual tastes, which is pretty cool.
“With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers, we are reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent,” said Bob Borchers, VP of Worldwide Product Marketing at Apple. “This next generation of CarPlay gives drivers a smarter, safer way to use their iPhone in the car, while deeply integrating with the car’s systems and showcasing the unique look and feel of each automaker.”

The rollout of CarPlay Ultra starts today with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the U.S. and Canada, and will be available for existing models that feature the brand’s next-generation infotainment system through a software update in the coming weeks.
Among other car companies set to add CarPlay Ultra capability, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are already confirmed, although timing is not specified yet.
