Elvis Presley's Guitar Car Somehow Wound Up in France, Currently Listed on Ebay

There are custom-built cars, and then there are fantasy cars. One of the most spectacular of all time, the “Guitar Car” designed for the King of rock ‘n’ roll, Elvis Presley, is back in the news.

After disappearing for decades, the car has just resurfaced on ebay, and apparently it’s now located in Orleans, France. The listing puts a price of 10,000 euros (or $15,785 CAD), but at the time of writing, no one had yet placed a bid. The sale closes on Saturday, and the best offer will be accepted.

Presley once drove the Guitar Car to one of his concerts in Las Vegas during his glory days. It was the work of legendary movie car builder Jay Ohrberg, the same man who’s responsible for the DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future, General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard, KITT from Knight Rider 2000, various Batmobiles and many other Hollywood classics.

Ohrberg cut a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado in half, then connected the two sections using a bespoke extended chassis and gave the rear a complete makeover to resemble a guitar. To top it all off, the entire body was painted candy pink.

For some strange reason, what used to represent the guitar's fingerboard and frets is absent from the pictures accompanying the listing. The car is not currently in driving condition, suggesting that the 8.2-litre V8 under the hood and many other components are in need of major repair and maintenance.

More realistically, though, the buyer will simply use the car for show. Still, it could prove to be an  expensive project, and that’s not even counting transportation logistics for the 12.5-metre-long automobile. We’re a little over two years away from the 50th anniversary of the King’s death, by the way, so there’s time.
