Los Olivos, California—On a twisty back road perfectly suited to a Porsche 718 Boxster, Mazda MX-5 or Subaru BRZ, the all-electric Lucid Gravity impresses with its driving dynamics and performance. I didn't expect to drive so fast behind the wheel of a three-row SUV that weighs just over 2.7 metric tons, but that's exactly what I experienced under rather unusual conditions. Let me explain.

After overtaking several colleagues, I caught up with another Gravity that soon began to speed along, and I followed it onto a mountain road where the pace was intense. Through the numerous corners and elevation changes, the Gravity was as comfortable as a genuine sports car. By the way, our tester was a Grand Touring model equipped with a standard air suspension and the optional Dynamic Handling Package comprising a three-chamber air suspension system and ZF-developed rear-wheel steering. Three drive modes are available, and I had selected Sprint mode, with all systems set for maximum handling and performance (the other two modes include Smooth and Swift).

Perfect Synergy

The Gravity has a very rigid chassis, powerful brakes developed jointly with Brembo, Bilstein shock absorbers and Bosch power steering—pretty serious stuff. However, the most impressive thing about driving the Gravity is the perfect synergy between all of these elements, which contributes to boosting driver confidence. In fact, from behind the wheel, this SUV feels and behaves exactly as you'd expect it to, whatever the situation. Its reactions are totally predictable, making you feel at one with the machine.

Power delivery is extremely linear, too. On that note, the Gravity's dual electric motors generate 828 combined horsepower and 909 lb-ft of torque. The torque vectoring and traction control systems developed for the Lucid Air Sapphire have been modified to account for the Gravity's heavier weight.

After several minutes of driving at a frantic pace, my driving buddy in the front passenger seat asked me to take a break on the side of the road to collect his wits and avoid getting sick. A short while later, when we arrived at the coffee break, I got to know the driver of the speeding Gravity in front of us, only to discover that it wasn't a fellow journalist, but rather David Lickfold, Senior Director of Chassis and Vehicle Dynamics Engineering at Lucid Motors. It all made sense now.

During a brief conversation, I told him how impressed I was with the Gravity, but that I had identified two issues—steering is a little too light in Sprint mode, while the thick A-pillars impede visibility when trying to locate the apex in a left-hand turn. Other than that, however, the Gravity's handling is so remarkable that you forget you're behind the wheel of a three-row SUV capable of towing 6,000 lbs.

Off-Road? Why Not?

Lucid took us on a rallycross-style off-road driving course where the Gravity once again demonstrated its superb dynamics and predictable behaviour. The electronic stability control system performed very well thanks to the Terrain mode developed specifically for this SUV. When deactivated, the Gravity almost transforms into a rally car, yet its reactions are always easy to anticipate, even when pushed to its limits.

By the way, for our first experience with the Gravity, we didn’t care one bit about efficiency, which resulted in combined energy consumption of 33 kWh/100 km, nearly double what Lucid is advertising (17.9 kWh/100 km).

Fast Charging Up to 350 kW

The Gravity's battery capacity is 123 kWh, enabling a range of around 700 km in ideal conditions. That’s awesome. Furthermore, the Gravity is equipped with an NACS charging port located on the left rear fender and can charge faster on a Supercharger than even Tesla vehicles. Credit goes to Lucid’s proprietary rear motor that can boost the charging voltage.

As a matter of fact, when plugged into a 350kW DC charger, the Gravity can recuperate 320 km of range in just 11 minutes. According to Lucid engineers, it’s the fastest-charging electric vehicle on the market right now, except for some Chinese models. Level 2 AC charging is possible up to 19 kW.

Mid-Century Interior

Lucid designers drew inspiration from mid-century furniture and California's wide-open spaces to create a cabin with clean lines as well as materials and colours evoking certain regions of the Golden State, such as Ojai, Mojave, Tahoe and Yosemite. The high-tech part is delivered by a curved 34-inch OLED digital panel and a horizontal screen, both of which have stunning graphic quality.

Occupants can even enjoy videos and soundtracks as relaxation programs during a charging session. It is also possible for the driver to choose the type of content to be displayed on either screen and configure driving information, audio and navigation as required when the vehicle is in motion.

Excellent Drag Coefficient

The Gravity has a much lower profile than most competitors, whether battery- or ICE-powered, and its magnificently sculpted silhouette gives it an excellent drag coefficient of 0.24. Some might even call it a minivan or a wagon.

Inside, the remarkably spacious cabin is a treat for every passenger. Only the much larger Cadillac Escalade IQ offers more room in the third row. Speaking of which, the third-row seats can be folded and stowed away under the floor, creating a perfectly flat cargo area. The rear doors open to almost 90 degrees, making it much easier to get on board. Oh, and the Gravity also has a front trunk with a cushion that can be used as a place to sit and take a break in the sun.
