Major Upgrades Coming to 2026 Lexus RZ Should Get Drivers Excited

Similar to the Toyota bZ4X that rides on the same platform, the Lexus RZ luxury electric crossover is getting a series of major upgrades and enhancements for the 2026 model year, as shown today in a world premiere in Brussels, Belgium.

Basically, expect more power, longer range, faster charging speeds and a new driving experience. Oh, and a new F SPORT model, too.

Going Faster and Farther

The Lexus RZ powertrain has undergone a complete overhaul, including a more powerful rear motor and a new lithium-ion battery whose capacity has increased to 77 kWh. In Europe, three models will be offered: a 221-horsepower RZ 350e, 375-horsepower RZ 500e and 402-horsepower RZ 550e F SPORT. You can already forget about the first, but the other two are likely to end up in Canada to replace the existing 308-horsepower RZ 450e.

What's more, the maximum towing capacity of the AWD-equipped, dual-motor RZ is doubled to 1,500 kg (again in Europe), whereas the one we have here isn't even recommended for towing.

By reducing power losses, increasing battery capacity and optimizing the various control systems, Lexus claims that range has been increased by up to 100 km depending on the model. Of course, this is based on the WLTP test cycle. But realistically speaking, we can expect the revised RZ to finally be able to drive more than 400 km with a full battery charge instead of just 354 km like it does now.

Charging performance has also been enhanced thanks to the adoption of a new 22kW AC onboard charger, while cold-weather charging promises to be faster with the help of a new battery pre-conditioning function.

New Steering and Fake Gearbox

Initially announced three years ago, Lexus’ steer-by-wire system (with no physical link between the steering wheel and the axles) is coming for the 2026 model year. The idea is to reduce steering effort and improve control for the driver, but this is likely to come at the expense of feedback.

The optional system is paired with a near-rectangular, yoke-style steering wheel featuring curved grips on the left and right sides, helping focus the driver’s attention on the road ahead while freeing up space around the knees and legs. It operates in a range of approximately 200 degrees from lock to lock. Furthermore, the steering gear ratio is dynamically adjusted according to vehicle speed, offering increased manoeuvrability at low speeds and better stability at high speeds, Lexus says.

Lexus has simultaneously revised its DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system to improve torque distribution, especially under acceleration and when cornering. Structural rigidity has been increased, with a focus on torsional stiffness, in order to make the RZ more agile and also quieter. In fact, additional noise- and vibration-cancelling measures are implemented throughout the vehicle.

There’s one more thing, namely what Lexus calls Interactive Manual Drive, which allows the driver to control power output using paddle shifters as if the RZ was a conventional car with a manual transmission. Operation is accompanied by real-time feedback through the throttle as well as sounds and visuals in the cabin. No one’s going to be fooled, but hey, a few other EVs are coming up with their own fake gearbox, so give Lexus some credit.

Sportier Looks

As for styling, the new Lexus RZ 550e F SPORT stands out the most with front lower bumper mouldings, brake ducts, front and rear spoilers and a revised rear bumper. The 20-inch aero-design wheels have an alloy base and aerodynamic resin covers. Along with that, customers will have an exclusive new body colour to choose, Neutrino Grey.

The interior of the RZ F SPORT is finished in Black and Dark Grey with blue stitched accents as a nod to the electric powertrain. A Microgeometric pattern can be found on the door panels. Other details include F SPORT scuff plates and steering wheel and aluminium pedals.

Alternatively, Lexus has applied laser-processed graphics to the available Ultrasuede seats, which are made from sustainable 30-percent plant-based materials. In another first, the multi-colour ambient lighting has a new, dynamic shadow effect.
