The Best Subcompact SUVs in 2025

Looking at all the subcompact SUVs and crossovers available on the market, the team at The Car Guide has identified the three models that represent the best buys for 2025.

These are some of the most popular vehicles in Canada as they are cheaper and more fuel-efficient than compact or larger SUVs. They are also considered more practical than conventional cars thanks to their extra ground clearance and handy rear hatch. What's more, all of them offer all-wheel drive as standard or as an option.

1. Subaru Crosstrek

A year after the launch of the third generation, the Crosstrek continues to make a strong case as the most competent and most desirable small SUV on the market. No wonder it keeps racking up awards and accolades along the way.

Well-suited to Canadian roads with its excellent AWD system and nicely calibrated suspension, Subaru's higher-riding Impreza alternative is safe and fun to drive all year long. It also boasts an ergonomic and spacious interior (except for the trunk), while the two available engines satisfy a variety of drivers (the 182-horsepower, 2.5-litre unit is the preferred choice, of course). The rugged Wilderness model is a segment leader in terms of off-road capability, but you have to ask yourself if you really need one.

While the Crosstrek's fuel consumption ratings aren’t bad, you should know that some competitors fare better in that department. A hybrid variant will join the lineup for the 2026 model year. Pricing has yet to be announced.

2. Toyota Corolla Cross

The Corolla Cross is another smart pick given its combination of quality, reliability, safety, space and comfort. Don’t forget about its low maintenance costs and high resale value.

Driving dynamics are rather unremarkable, and the engines prove noisy when pushed. On the other hand, they tend to burn very little fuel. In particular, the Corolla Cross Hybrid offers a rare blend of power and efficiency with 196 horsepower and a combined rating of 5.6 L/100 km. Depending on where you live, finding one can be tough task, mind you.

3. Hyundai Kona

Rounding out the top 3 in the subcompact SUV segment is the Kona, which was completely redesigned a year ago just like the Crosstrek. Regardless of the powertrain (naturally aspirated, turbocharged or fully electric), Hyundai's glorified hatchback stands out with bold styling and more interior space than its predecessor where rear passengers and cargo are concerned. It’s actually one of the best small crossovers in this respect.

The Kona is pleasant to drive (despite limited visibility in the rear), even more so in N Line trim with a 190-horsepower, 1.6-litre turbo engine. The interior is conveniently laid out and features a user-friendly infotainment system. Fuel consumption could be better, more specifically if you’re looking at an AWD-equipped model. On the other hand, Hyundai’s vehicle and powertrain warranties trump most competitors.
