The Best Full-Size Pickups of 2023

Led by the Ford F-150, full-size pickups are by far the top sellers in Canada, and that’s been the case for many years. With plenty of engine options, superior capability and more interior space than midsize models, these trucks are fantastic for work and recreation.

Which one is the best money can buy? The Car Guide has gathered its team of experts to identify the best full-size pickups on the market in 2023. Check them out right here!

The best-selling Ford F-150 comes out on top, but it’s close. Available in a wide array of models and configurations, not to mention hybrid and fully electric variants, the pride of Dearborn, Michigan has something for everyone.

The base engine delivers decent but not great performance, which is why we prefer the turbocharged 2.7-litre and 3.5-litre V6 engines, even though they have some reliability issues.

For 2023, Ford added a new entry-level model called Rattler, as well as an almighty Raptor R with 700 horsepower that can directly challenge the Hellcat-motivated Ram 1500 TRX.

And of course, there’s the battery-powered F-150 Lightning. While range can drop pretty fast when towing, this full-size pickup should definitely please drivers who don’t have heavy loads to tow on a regular basis.

2. Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra

GM’s full-size twins miss the No. 1 spot by a slim margin. For 2023, the Sierra adds a new top-line trim called Denali Ultimate. Off-road driving enthusiasts, meanwhile, can turn to the Sierra AT4X model or the Silverado ZR2.

We don’t recommend settling for the turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder unless you don’t plan to work hard with your truck. The two V8 options (5.3 litres and 6.2 litres) are much more satisfying options, and reliability is not so much a concern. Then there’s the six-cylinder Duramax turbo-diesel and its tremendous torque. The price difference between gasoline and diesel right now makes it less attractive, though.

Both the Silverado and Sierra offer a sophisticated cabin and a smooth ride. The off-road models prove much less enjoyable on pavement, but that’s the price you must pay to get a truck that will venture where few vehicles can.

3. Ram 1500

Third place in the full-size pickup segment goes to the Ram 1500. Featuring a handsome interior with class-leading fit and finish, it makes for pleasant times on the road. The user-friendly infotainment system adds to the experience, just like the comfortable seats and adaptive air suspension. Over the years, the latter has experienced a few problems with cold and harsh weather conditions like ours, mind you, so consider yourself warned.

The 3.6-litre V6 and 5.7-litre HEMI V8 are flexible and capable performers. If you feel like you need to destroy everything in your path, the 700-horsepower, supercharged 6.2-litre V8 in the Ram 1500 TRX is the perfect engine for you.

Interestingly, the brand keeps selling the previous-generation truck (called Ram 1500 Classic) even five years after the new one made its debut. It’s a cheaper alternative for those who don’t necessarily want the latest tech and gadgets.
