Volvo Debuts First Direct Injection Motor

Any modern car really will need to have direct injection. Revolutionizing fuel delivery in much the same way as fuel injection did, direct injection allows engineers to extract more power and better efficiency from their engines; both goals that are imperative for staying competitive.

And now Volvo’s got their own direct injection powerplant. Known for championing the cause of bizarrely configured powertrains, the new engine is unexpectedly normal. With four cylinders arranged in the standard inline configuration with a turbocharger bolted to the exhaust manifold, the new engine produces 203 horsepower and 221 lb. Ft. of torque. As is now de rigueur, there’s also an overboost function to increase torque by 15 lb. Ft. for short periods.

It is expected to go into duty beneath the shapely hood of the S80 first, with subsequent use in the XC60, with either a six speed dual clutch automatic or six speed manual behind it.
