Plymouth HEMI Superbird Tops $2 Million at Barrett-Jackson Auction
The 2022 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction certainly didn’t lack desirable and head-turning cars. In total, 663 vehicles and memorabilia sold with no reserve for $49.1 million USD ($63.2 million CAD), a record for Barrett-Jackson in Sin City.
One of the main attractions came from the glory days of muscle cars, namely a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner HEMI Superbird that has benefited from a professional restoration. It is one of 135 produced and number 1,723 of the 1970 NASCAR wing car homologation programs.

Bidding ended at a whopping $1.65 million USD ($2.1 million CAD). Can you imagine that?
Under the long hood of this fancy Superbird is a 7.0-litre HEMI V8 engine mated to a TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission and Chrysler 8.75-inch rear axle with a 3.55 ratio. It also features power steering, power brakes with front discs, HEMI suspension with firm ride shocks as well as dual exhaust with chrome exhaust tips.
The car still has its original aero nose and original rear wing, but the body is now finished in bright Tor Red. Inside, silver accents on the vinyl seats and roadrunner floor mats provide a dash of colour to the otherwise all-black interior.
By the way, the third most expensive vehicle sold at the 2022 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction was another Plymouth—one of just 59 1971 Hemi 'Cudas equipped with a manual transmission. It sold for $550,000 USD ($707,900 CAD), which is only a third of the Superbird’s price, but still an impressive amount.
