Many Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner enthusiasts will be disappointed that the next-generation models won’t arrive for 2023 as previously suspected. But as it usually does, the company is adding new trims and special editions to keep them happy.

The original 4Runner was built on the Toyota pickup platform, which founded the heritage of Toyota’s success in off-road racing. As an homage to those early racers, the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition fittingly wears retro-inspired yellow/orange/red body graphics that

The body can be specified in White, Midnight Black Metallic (our favourite) or Barcelona Red Metallic. There are bronze-coloured alloy wheels and badges, plus a TOYOTA heritage grille up front.

The anniversary theme continues inside with exclusive badging on the centre console, bronze stitching on the seats and shift knob, 40th Anniversary floor mats and a 40th Anniversary logo on the black SofTex-trimmed seats. Topping it off is a standard power moonroof.

The 4.0-litre V6 engine is unchanged, obviously. As for the rest of the 2023 4Runner lineup, Toyota has expanded safety content with more features included as standard on the various trim levels. By the way, the 4Runner TRD Sport that was added last year is back.

Pricing will be announced at a later date.
