2017-2022 Kia Sportage: What You Should Know Before You Buy

What do you think about the new and entirely redesigned 2023 Kia Sportage? Both the interior and exterior have undergone quite a change. And the addition of a hybrid and rechargeable hybrid drives makes it even more interesting.

That being said, its predecessor could very well make you happy too. It all depends on your needs. To make things clearer for you, here’s what you need to know about the 2017-2022 Kia Sportage.

The line includes five main trims: LX, EX, EX Premium, EX Tech and SX Turbo. The entry-level ones offer a choice between a front-wheel or an all-wheel drive, while the others all have an AWD.

Two Engines

The main engine is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower, but the SX Turbo trim is the one that outranks the competition, with a turbocharged 2-litre engine producing 237 horsepower and a solid 260 ft-lb of torque. However, the towing capacity remains at 2,000 pounds and the 19-inch wheels make the transition to winter tires expensive. All trims come with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Speaking of capacity, the trunk can handle 868 litres of luggage, and by lowering the backseat, you get 1,703 litres of volume. As for fuel consumption, it varies from 9 to 11 L/100 km on average, depending on the engine and the drive. Safety

With regard to safety, the former Sportage has set itself apart in the NHTSA collision tests, but weirdly enough, not in the IIHS’ (like several other small SUVs). Luckily, it could be equipped with safety systems like an emergency brake assist, as well as front and rear parking sensors.

An important update was made for model year 2020, which includes a style improvement of the front section of the body and new seat materials. A new standard multimedia system with an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay was also added. Then, for more peace of mind behind the wheel, Kia has improved the equipment with options like a drowsiness detection system, a lane departure assist, and a sophisticated frontal collision avoidance system.

Towards the end of the generation, a Nightfall Edition, with a dark and sporty look, was added; a must-have for those who want a distinctive touch.

In conclusion, the 2017-2022 Sportage is a well-built small SUV that is fun to drive, without sacrificing comfort on bumpy roads. Its reliability is good, as shown by J.D. Power’s ratings, as is its level of equipment for the price. However, interior space and fuel economy are not among its strengths, and the same goes for soundproofing.
