2022 Ford Expedition Adds Timberline Model, BlueCruise, Giant Screen

The current Ford Expedition is about to enter its fifth year on the market and deserves a mid-cycle update. Say hello to the refreshed and improved 2022 model, which is making its official debut today at Motor Bella in Detroit.

The biggest news is the addition of a more rugged trim level called Timberline, following in the footsteps of the Explorer. A direct answer to the Jeep Wagoneer, it “sets a new standard with full-size SUV customers who need more passenger space, great off-road capability and a basecamp for life’s journeys,” says Mike Kipley, Ford Expedition chief engineer.

It starts with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT, best-in-class 10.6-inch ground, a wider track and improved approach and departure angles. The skid plates come from the F-150 Raptor, while Trail Turn Assist can shorten the turning radius on hairpin trails just like with the Bronco. In fact, the Expedition Timberline was put to the test in the same locations as the Bronco.

Under the hood is Ford’s high-output 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine producing 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque (same as Raptor, minus 10 horsepower). A unique front grille and Active Orange accents throughout are part of the mix, too.

The aforementioned engine also powers Expedition Limited and Limited MAX models equipped with the new Stealth Edition Performance Package, which includes a sport-tuned suspension, many blacks accents (such as the 22-inch wheels) and red brake callipers.

Hands-free Driving With BlueCruise

Sitting at the top of the 2022 Ford Expedition lineup, the Platinum model gets BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving technology. The system allows owners to operate their vehicle hands-free on the highway while being monitored by a driver-facing camera to ensure they keep their eyes on the road. It is compatible on prequalified sections of divided highways called Hands-Free Blue Zones.

The F-150 and Mustang Mach-E are also available with BlueCruise, and just like them the Expedition can now be had with a gigantic 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen (12 inches standard), not to mention a 12.4-inch high-definition digital gauge cluster with Expedition-specific graphics and animations.

A 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed Sound System and Rear Seat Entertainment System with 16 gigabytes of storage are optional, while Ford Power-Up software enables over-the-air updates.

No Hybrid Yet

Unlike the F-150 and Explorer, which both offer a hybrid powertrain, the 2022 Expedition resists electrification. The people at Ford claim they’re satisfied with the current model’s fuel economy, so don’t expect a gas-electric variant to come before the next generation arrives.

A quick final note to tell you that Pro Trailer Backup Assist moves to version 2.0, so drivers will no longer have to put a “target” on the trailer and in-put trailer dimensions in the system—everything will be automatic. Incidentally, maximum towing capacity is still rated at 9,200 pounds when equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package.

The 2022 Ford Expedition will go on sale in the first quarter of next year and pricing will be announced closer to launch.
